When people are displaced and roam from pillar to post in search of mazdoori they come to glittering cities like Mumbai and live on footpaths, near pipelines, railway tracks and begin life anew. But they live in insecurity because sarkar can remove them at will. Women face tremendous insecurity. They live in bastis where no civic amenities are provided. There is no water, electricity. They face attacks by policemen, goondas and politicians alike. Collection of haftas (weekly collection of money) in the jhopadpattis (urban slums) of Mumbai is common place.
