Rehmat

Submergence Village Chikhalda, Madhya Pradesh (M.P.).

~2 minutes

Rehmat, a resident of the submergence village Chikhalda in M.P. and an oustee himself, has been a senior full time activist of Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA).

Rehmat is very knowledgeable, has a deep study of all the issues related to the SSP and is an articulate activist of the NBA. The famous social worker, Padma Vibhushan Awardee Baba Amte had built a small house named ‘Nij-Bal’ (Self Strength) on the Banks of the Narmada and had resolved to stay there as gesture of resistance to the SSP. When Baba Amte had to return to Anandvan due to his ailing health, Rehmat, along with his many responsibilities in the NBA,  also managed ‘Nij-Bal’. Rehmat now works with the Manthan Adhyayan Kendra, while continuing to work for the NBA. He, along with other activists of the NBA, was the recipient of the first RTI awards announced by NDTV for his work in exposing massive corruption in the resettlement of the Narmada oustees in M.P. In this short clip from Rehmat’s longer interview, he describes the impact of the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the archeologically rich Narmada River valley.
